Chicken Katsu is a popular Japanese dish made with breaded and fried chicken cutlets. It’s crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and usually served with tonkatsu sauce and a side of rice or cabbage salad.
📋 Ingredients:
- 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts 🐔
- 1 cup all-purpose flour 🌾
- 2 large eggs, beaten 🥚
- 1 cup panko breadcrumbs 🍞
- Salt and pepper to taste 🧂
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional) 🧄
- Vegetable oil, for frying 🛢️
For the Tonkatsu Sauce:
- 1/4 cup ketchup 🍅
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 🥫
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce 🌿
- 1 tablespoon sugar 🍬
- 1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard 🌿
📝 Instructions:
1. Prepare the Chicken:
- Pound the chicken:
- Place the chicken breasts between two sheets of plastic wrap and pound them with a meat mallet until they are about 1/2 inch thick.
- Season the chicken:
- Season both sides of the chicken with salt, pepper, and garlic powder (if using).
2. Bread the Chicken:
- Prepare the breading station:
- Set up three shallow bowls: one with flour, one with beaten eggs, and one with panko breadcrumbs.
- Bread the chicken:
- Dredge each chicken breast in flour, shaking off the excess. Then dip it into the beaten eggs, followed by coating it with panko breadcrumbs. Press the breadcrumbs firmly onto the chicken to ensure an even coating.
3. Fry the Chicken:
- Heat the oil:
- Heat about 1/4 inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Fry the chicken:
- Carefully place the breaded chicken breasts into the hot oil and fry for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and cooked through (internal temperature should reach 165°F/75°C).
- Drain the chicken:
- Transfer the fried chicken to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
4. Make the Tonkatsu Sauce:
- Mix the sauce:
- In a small bowl, whisk together the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, sugar, and Dijon mustard until smooth.
5. Serve:
- Slice the chicken:
- Slice the Chicken Katsu into strips and drizzle with tonkatsu sauce.
- Serve with sides:
- Serve the chicken with steamed rice, shredded cabbage, and extra sauce on the side.
🍽️ Tips:
- Bake instead of fry: For a lighter version, bake the breaded chicken at 400°F (200°C) for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through.
- Make it a Katsu sandwich: Serve the chicken katsu in a sandwich with cabbage and tonkatsu sauce for a delicious twist.
